But there are still so many ways to access it and experience first-hand how important it is to Sicilian life. “Anyone living near Catania can feel it rumbling at night,” Dana says. “It’s talking to them.”&nbsp;

At the back of my mind, I've always been curious about what the Faroe Islands were like, because I've heard so many stories about the islands—almost mythical stories—because it's so far in the middle of the Atlantic, even more so than Iceland.&nbsp;&nbsp;

What were your first impressions the first time you went?&nbsp;I was so struck by the purity of the country. The landscape is still relatively untouched. There are roads connecting settlements and towns, and ferry lines connecting all the islands, but not much else. And in a way, it's this amazing open slate. I was really struck by the stark nature, similar to what we find in Iceland in some places—barren, treeless, dramatic instances of land rising out of the ocean, many sheep. It is really a beautiful thing to me. I find it so inspiring to see these almost barren landscapes and to learn how people live off the land like that.&nbsp;And not just survive, but thrive, right?&nbsp;It was amazing to learn about, culturally, all the things they do that bind their community together. Learning about knitting clubs, book clubs and heimablídni—the tradition of hosting others in your home for dinner—as ways they stay connected. There are other, more practical ways too, through farming practices, like trading and selling meat to each other, for instance. They wear beautiful hand-knit sweaters and they know who knit each one. To me, it's a beautiful way of life.

This is a hiking trip. Can you talk a little bit about the routes that people will walk?&nbsp;The Faroese say every island has its own unique views and landscapes and with our guide's help, they will be pointing out the differences on every route. It could be the direction of the sunrise and sunset and the way the light strikes our paths. Sometimes it could be the vistas of the different islands and the history in those areas.&nbsp;&nbsp;From a more logistical standpoint, we are walking on single-track sheep paths. These are ancient paths that the sheep create—they automatically go towards the easiest route. And we’ll pass a lot of farms and waterfalls that make up the bucolic landscape of the Faroes.&nbsp;Are there any moments that you’re especially excited for our travellers to experience?&nbsp;We will have a meal at a farmhouse with the farmer whose family trained the staff at Ræst, one of two Michelin-starred restaurants in the small country’s capital, Tórshavn,&nbsp;about fermentation. We will be invited to do a farm tour and see where the sheep roam in the spring and where they go up in the summertime to higher ground. We'll learn about the free-range grazing that their sheep do, and then be invited into their barn to see where the rams are kept and learn about their importance. And then you're invited into their home, a beautiful farmhouse passed down generations to the current farmer. We’ll have a beautiful connective meal together from their garden, from their sheep, and talk about life in the Faroe Islands. Being in their home is like being in a living museum. It’s a real glimpse into life in the Faroes.

Desert Queen: The Extraordinary Life of Gertrude Bell 

From the ruins of ancient Petra to the Bedouin camps, this book provides insight into all aspects of Arabian life through the eyes of John Lewis Burckhardt. He was a Swiss explorer who spent years studying and exploring Arabia and Egypt in preparation for his trip to unearth the source of the River Niger. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.

Travels in Syria and the Holy Land

A thrilling narrative about the Arab Revolt against the Turks, this classic tale reveals how the Middle East was forever changed during World War I, focusing on a young military officer who was torn between two nations. My Time on the Danube: Paddling My Way Through Hungary

Growing up on the east coast of Canada near Lake Banook in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, sprint-racing canoeing has always been part of my life. My passion for the sport would allow me to travel the world and eventually led me to represent Canada at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece.While racing demanded speed, I found slowing down and taking in the surroundings to be magical. Much like biking a route with friends, canoeing with a group of friends is a wonderful way to appreciate the beauty of a region from a new perspective.&nbsp;While every European country has its unique charm, Hungary holds a special place in my heart as it played a significant role in my canoeing career. My long-time coach is Hungarian, and his passion for the sport and his homeland were unmistakable. Hungary has a rich history in canoeing and has produced more Olympic medals in the sport than any other country.

As an athlete, I spent many summers training and racing in Hungary. I trained with many of the best paddlers in Hungary, and some of the best paddlers in the world.&nbsp;While canoeing up and down the Danube river we would meet many locals who were happy to share a drink and a smile. Despite the language barrier, their warmth and welcoming nature shone through.&nbsp;Lake Balaton, in particular, left a lasting impression on me. Following a competition in Szeged, Hungary, I spent time in the region with my teammates and newfound local friends. I was immediately drawn to the culture and warm hospitality. The White Lotus: On Location in Sicily

Here at the Slow Road, we love sharing tv shows and movies that visually transport us to the world's most beguiling places, stirring inspiration for a region when we’re deciding where to go next. In this post, we’re rounding up all locations you can visit from HBO’s The White Lotus, a series following a group of characterful guests as their week of drama unravels in <a href="https://butterfield.com/destination/europe/italy/sicily" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Sicily</a>.&nbsp;Season 2 saw The White Lotus trade their address in Maui for the chic coastal town Taormina, nestled on Sicily’s eastern coast. Jennifer Coolidge returns as Tanya McQuoid Hunt, who heads to Sicily to live out her Monica Vitti dreams while attempting to re-kindle the romance with her husband. Meanwhile, Sopranos star Michael Imperioli makes his White Lotus debut as Dominic Di Grasso, a Hollywood producer embarking on a heritage trip with his father and son to explore their Sicilian roots. Among them are couple Harper and Ethan, a lawyer and a tech entrepreneur who join their old college friends on a trip, Daphne and Cameron.

The group is first seen cruising to their pastel-pink White Lotus hotel perched overlooking the Ionian Sea. Guests are mainly seen basking poolside or on the property’s terrace, but you’ll also find them taking to the streets of Taormina, embarking on cultural trips to Noto and Palermo and even visiting a few of The Godfather locations.

The real-life White Lotus is <a href="https://www.fourseasons.com/taormina/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">San Domenico Palace</a>, a stunning Four Seasons property clinging to a rocky cliff with panoramic views of Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea. The resort was first constructed in the 14th c. as a convent for wealthy Taormina resident, Damiano Rosso. 400 years later it was taken over by Prince Cerami, who transformed the place into one of Europe’s first grand hotels with the addition of a large wing. With Taormina’s reputation for over-the-top parties and beautiful scenery, San Domenico was the place to see and be seen, attracting the likes of Edward VII of England, Oscar Wilde and DH Lawrence.

San Domenico Palace, A Four Seasons Hotel

The hotel was bombed by the Allies during WWII, then re-opened in 1946, attracting more illustrious guests like Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor and Greta Garbo. Four Seasons officially took over in 2021, enhancing its reputation as Italy's most beautiful hotel, and one of the world's most famous.It’s hard not to watch with envy as Daphne sips her Aperol Spritz by the infinity pool, gazing at Mount Etna in the distance. Or when Harper is deciding between the arugula salad or the whitefish on San Domenico’s panoramic terrace overlooking the Bay of Taormina. Or when the entire group is seen sharing awkward dining moments at the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant, <a href="https://www.fourseasons.com/taormina/dining/restaurants/principe-cerami/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Principe Cerami</a>, helmed by Etna-born chef Massimo Mantarro.

The interiors at San Domenico are best defined as a treasure trove of art history. The hotel’s <a href="https://butterfield.com/get-inspired/sicilys-arab-influence" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">long and tangled past</a> is a perfect representation of the Sicilian culture you see today: a mix of civilizations that have left their mark through the centuries, from the Greeks and Romans to the French, Spanish and Arabs.Architect Valentina Pisani oversaw the hotel’s design, weaving in neutral tones peppered with vivid colours. Rosaria Catania Cucchiara spearheaded the historical restoration project, spending significant time restoring works of art, paintings, frescos and statues. These opulent works of art are impossible to miss throughout the series, from the ominous Testa Di Moro statues that seem to gaze back at you no matter where you are in the room, to the Medusa-inspired heads splattered throughout Tanya’s suite.

On day three, Daphne and Harper are seen embarking on a day trip to Noto, one of Sicily’s most gorgeous seaside towns with its baroque palazzos and mesmerizing cathedrals. While the town looks like a movie set come to life, it still retains a laid-back atmosphere that’s perfect for exploring off-the-beaten-path. Daphne and Harper follow cobbled streets past the Piazza del Duomo and the Noto Cathedral, soon finding themselves at a three-story villa decorated in frescoes from floor to ceiling. The real-life property is actually privately-owned Villa Tasca in Palermo, about a four-hour drive from Noto.

Noto, Palermo & Fiumefreddo

While the girls head to Noto, three generations of the Di Grasso family spend the day touring filming locations from The Godfather, including Castello degli Schiavi in the coastal town of Fiumefreddo, and the 18th c. Villa Corleone. The Di Grasso’s are also seen touring the ancient Greek theatre called Teatro Antico di Taormina, built in the 3rd century BC.

In Cambodia, A Return to Gratitude

B&amp;R Veteran Guide Alice Van der Voort reflects on visiting Vietnam and Cambodia with fresh eyes, and her lessons learned on gratitude amidst hardship.

It’s been four years since my last visit to Cambodia and three years since my last trip to Vietnam. Being back after such a long time, I realize how much I’ve missed this place. Seeing the impact of the lockdowns and the hardships that the Khmer people have had to endure due to Covid is heartbreaking. Without tourism, they’ve had to go back to the basics: things like surviving on rice and water.

I was saddened to learn that Mr. Hak, B&amp;R’s head Tuk Tuk driver since 2007, had to sell his new car and move back to his hometown to support his family. He worked so hard for that car and was so proud of this achievement, but he was forced to sell it at a big loss due to the economic impact of the pandemic. But when I arrived, I saw Mr. Hak waiting for me in front of my hotel in his old Tuk Tuk, and the joy of seeing each other again erased the four-year gap between us. We hugged, and he started laughing and smiling, and we were back to our good old times.These moments made me realize the lasting relationships that we've built here. Mr. Hak told me about the many restaurants that closed down due to the pandemic and how he lost a dear friend from Sweden who had supported him and his family for the last ten years. Despite the obstacles he faced, Mr. Hak still managed to focus on the positives. It was heartwarming to see him back to work with his jokes and infectious smile, and I'm grateful for the friendships that have been forged during my time in Cambodia.

On a day off during my trip, I visited the Killing Fields with my friends as they wanted to understand more about the Khmer Rouge regime. Although I prefer not to visit such sights, Mr. Hak dropped us off at the Memorial site. I must warn you, spending an hour here will guarantee that you won't sleep for at least three nights!It is a horrible sight, and nobody speaks. The silence is deafening. When we exited the site, a scooter passed by with two little kids who greeted us with smiles shouting, "Hello, hello!" I was amazed at how quickly they turned the tide. They're so happy to live in the present moment and forget about the past.

This is one of the many reasons why I like to guide expeditions. I believe that we need to experience these emotions, be grateful for where we live, see how other people cope with their problems and enjoy the simplest things in life. They expect only the best, do not worry about tomorrow and cherish every moment.What's more, the colours of the countryside, the little shops, the smell of food, and the background noise of the Tuk Tuks all melt together with the smiles of these lovely people. I am so grateful to be here and witness all of this. It puts me back into the right perspective, which I had lost in the last three years: being grateful instead of resentful. Carpe diem.

And where you’ll feel the excitement surrounding its annual bike racing event—the <a href="https://www.giroditalia.it/en/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Giro d’Italia</a>—months&nbsp;in advance.Following closely behind Tour de France, the Giro d’Italia is one of the cycling world’s prestigious three-week-long Grand Tours. Since 1909, Giro fans have been gathering around their television sets to witness the nation’s top cyclists embark on a gruelling race around the country.Whether riders are zipping through the twisting vineyards of Prosecco Hills or trekking up the scarped edges of <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/destination/europe/italy/dolomites" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">the Dolomites</a>, Giro d’Italia’s scenic route shines a spotlight on Italy’s incredible diversity and beauty—it’s easy to understand why bicycles have been synonymous with Italian culture for over a century.&nbsp;

For avid cyclists, the thought of participating in a Grand Tour like the Giro d’Italia—racing alongside elite athletes as echoes of the roaring crowd fill the air—has historically been reserved for that of a daydream. Giro-E: A Professional Cycling Dream

Thanks to the 2018 introduction of the Giro-E biking event, a golden ticket is all that’s required to live out your wildest cycling dreams. Giro-E, the only stage event in existence reserved exclusively for pedal-assisted <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/get-inspired/your-e-bike-questions" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">e-bikes</a>, is the brainchild of RCS Sports, the same organizer of the Giro d’Italia.The event comprises 18 stages ranging from 70 to 115&nbsp;kilometres daily, along the same route, and during the same time the Giro&nbsp;d’Italia takes place. Best of all, it’s open to riders of all levels—from amateur cyclists to self-proclaimed pros; there’s a route and region perfect for everyone.Veteran Trip Designer <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/who-we-are/meet-the-designers/georgia-yuill" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Georgia Yuill</a>, our go-to expert for&nbsp;the Dolomites, had the chance to experience the Giro-E’s third official year in 2020, scoping out the circuit for future guiding endeavours. For Georgia, dropping into the Giro-E was like dropping&nbsp;into the Olympics and being allowed to run around the track ahead of the sprinters who are competing.“For the amateur, it’s like stepping into the big game and being part of that," Georgia said. "The Giro d'Italia is one of our annual major sporting events that people tune into even though they’re not cycling, like the World Series or the Superbowl. It’s an emotional event for Italians and the sport is growing everywhere around the world.”

The (Bike) Path to Glory

The Giro-E’s 2020 regional sectionals comprised six slots, with each slot passing through Italy’s bounty of <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/get-inspired/2017/06/29/the-8-best-biking-routes-in-italy" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">contrasting landscapes</a>: <ul><li>Slot 1 Sicily</li><li>Slot 2 Calabria and Apulia</li><li>Slot 3 Abruzzo, Marche, Emilia Romagna, San Marino</li><li>Slot 4 Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia</li><li>Slot 5 Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol, Veneto, Lombardy</li><li>Slot 6 Lombardy, Piedmont</li></ul>Georgia was designated Slot 1.&nbsp;“As the Giro-E, we’re advancing all of the professionals. We don’t start at the same point; we start further into the route," she said."By the time we finish our route at our pace, the Giro d’Italia racers come through and will cover the same final distance that we did.”

Georgia’s captain was <a href="https://www.maxlelli.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Max Lelli</a>, an ex-pro racer who lead the ENIT team to the most victories. <a href="https://www.procyclingstats.com/rider/moreno-moser" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Moreno Moser</a>, also an ex-pro racer, was great support for her along the routes as he shared a wealth of technical racing tips.“You’re riding with people who are very accomplished and captains who want you to be successful," she said. "I certainly came off learning so much about cycling and the world that surrounds it. They’re very passionate, and you just get taken into the professional side of the event.”

An E-Bike Boost

Although the circuit comprises steep ascents up rolling hills, up the mountainous Dolomites and even up Sicily’s active Mount Etna volcano, the boost from the e-bikes provides riders with as little or as much assistance needed—you don’t have to be an elite athlete to race alongside one.“Cycling up Mount Etna in <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/destination/europe/italy/sicily" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Sicily</a> was phenomenal. The Giro d’Italia racers were getting closer and closer….we had to get off the road so it wouldn’t conflict with their speed! We were moving at an accelerated speed the entire time, so going uphill is much faster," she said. "One of the great benefits is that the road has been cleared for you. There’s a sensation that you can really allow yourself to go at maximum speed.

This year’s Giro-E concludes at the end of May, but there are high hopes for those wishing to live out their Olympic dreams in the future.“Every year comprises a different route, and so once we hear where the Giro d’Italia is racing, we can design our own B&amp;R trip to move in parallel with it," she said. "Dolomites stages are always some of the most exciting aspects of the Giro. We could design a pre-event experience on classic Dolomites routes, following which travellers participate in some stages of the Giro-E.”

Besides the cultural aspect of having travellers learn about the surrounding wine regions, we introduce them to a local friend in which they can re-visit whenever they’re back in Bellagio– B&amp;Rs friends are our traveller's friends.Daniel, our charming Venetian speedboat driver, is another example of a superstar friend who’s known for guiding the likes of George Clooney and Madonna around the lakes. He knows all the best spots, from hidden coves to beautiful vistas and villas, and can take you on a high-speed adventure that will leave you breathless. Then there’s Rita, our local guide in Bellagio, who offers fascinating insights into the town's history and points out hidden gems that most travellers, and frankly other travel companies, miss if they’re not exploring the area with a local.

During a trip to Gandria with B&amp;R Guide Alice, we discovered a charming deli perfect for a picnic. We sampled their signature dishes and were blown away by the refreshing salad, feta-topped avocado toast and veggie quiche. However, as our group was too large to accommodate the small deli, Luana, the owner, offered to find us another place to host the picnic.&nbsp;She didn't disappoint and the following day, she took us through small alleys reminiscent of Amalfi to a private terrace in Gandria that overlooked the lake. The view was breathtaking, and we felt fortunate to experience it as Luana's guests! As we savoured some wine and admired the lake's shimmering waters, we felt grateful for this special moment.

My favourite hike is the Sentiero degli Ulivi trail in Switzerland. It's 8.5 kilometres long and starts in Castagnola, passing through olive groves , stone villages, forests, and meadows filled with wildflowers. As the path winds its way towards Gandria, you pass small hamlets and tiny stone villages, offering a glimpse into the traditional way of life in the region.The trail offers breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Lugano and the surrounding mountains. It's not too challenging, making it suitable for all levels of hikers. The hike ends at the Gandria harbour, perfect for relaxing and taking in the stunning views.

If you're a fan of the grandeur and majesty of 19th-century hotels, then this trip is truly a treat for you. You'll be staying in historic hotels that are adorned with museum pieces, where&nbsp;works of art have been created alongside the hotel itself.&nbsp;My favourite property on Italian Lakes Walking is the Grand Hotel Villa Castagnola in Lugano. The rooms are a delightful mix of 80s-style decor with modern art, and the diversity of having that Swiss touch really sparked my interest. But the real showstopper is Serbelloni. The spacious rooms with grand frescoes are bigger than my apartment in Berlin! It's opulent and luxurious, and our travellers will be truly impressed.

The Italian Lakes Walking trip is a perfect balance between challenging hikes, leisurely walks, activity and relaxation. Our daily walks are at most 7-8 miles, allowing travellers to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the shoreline and the Alps. The trip also showcases a diverse mix of landscapes, from the lakes to the mountains to the great city break we planned in between. With the alpine feeling of Lake Maggiore and the distinct beauty of Lake Como, travellers will feel like they are exploring different regions in just a matter of hours.

Particularly, it sheds light on the maximum-security prison on Robben Island, where notable activists such as Nelson Mandela were incarcerated starting from the early 1960s.The film explores cultural expression as a tool for social change, delving into the experiences of individuals who use music to cope with and protest against human rights violations under oppressive patriarchal regimes. I attended a lecture by a South African Shakespeare scholar <a href="https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C5CHFA_enZA935ZA937&amp;sxsrf=AJOqlzUY7ES_sMLyemYFY7pnCqqoH0OwLw:1675845237343&amp;q=David+Schalkwyk&amp;si=AEcPFx7HnMxbNS2egwqbd2fGseeWkZi3ZCVlQ3vY-NLoLE7SWbUQ82uezfdDZAMJu50ehtnBfgtGlCaaKjD7mHnxBybcD-642f77NaAIUI75KhxzDn03lxdUIVG6KvwrzUmQNCCQIpsmAek95plQQohWdPSsvNNYbgBjZxeDEG7-9L5fiKUnsQDvcQj7PhmBaxeG2_6I5rQ_-pinAZBGWrf8F6V4rHuzmA%3D%3D&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiB3seAwoX9AhXOT8AKHROyCxAQmxMoAHoECEMQAg" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">David Schalkwyk</a> who spoke about the so-called “Robben Island Shakespeare”. A copy of the Complete Works was secretly circulated by Sonny Venkatrathnam among his fellow political prisoners on Robben Island in the 1970s, asking them to sign their names next to their favourite passages. Sonny covered it with images of Hindu figures to disguise it as a holy book.Nelson Mandela signed next to a passage from Julius Caesar, which begins, “Cowards die many times before their deaths”. While Schalkwyk examined the representation and experience of imprisonment in South African prison memoirs and the prison that is Denmark for Shakespeare’s Hamlet, I was profoundly moved by his reference to “a book that had passed through the hands of the people who had saved my country,” and the idea of the power of literature and words to provide resistance for political prisoners during apartheid.&nbsp;

Q&A WITH DR. JANIE COLE 

So, as a musicologist, I wondered where was the music in such a space of intense oppression, violence, sorrow, and resistance in a country where singing is the primary cultural expression?&nbsp;&nbsp;Thus began this cultural-heritage preservation project in the form of a film, book and <a href="https://www.news.uct.ac.za/article/-2020-12-17-amplifying-the-voices-of-women-struggle-heroes" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 255);">archive</a>, which trace the role of music and resistance in apartheid prisons, with a special focus on Robben Island and the women’s jails, through first-hand struggle testimonies and music by surviving former political prisoners and guards.&nbsp;

I was inspired to found <a href="http://www.musicbeyondborders.net/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 255);">Music Beyond Borders</a>, which focuses on the role of music in social change, surviving trauma and supporting human rights, after my first interviews with former political prisoners of apartheid in 2011.&nbsp;After surviving 9/11, I was unable to listen to music for a long time thereafter, which as a musicologist I found incomprehensible on so many levels, so I got interested in how music and sound can link to trauma, memory, sensory association and overload, and healing.&nbsp;&nbsp;I was most impacted by the stories of abuse and conditions in the prisons and of apartheid. I had read Nelson Mandela’s now famous comment from his 1994 autobiography about the conditions in South Africa’s apartheid prisons which reflected the reality of thousands of political activists:&nbsp;&nbsp;“It is said that no one truly knows a nation until one has been inside its jails. A nation should not be judged by how it treats its highest citizens, but its lowest ones – and South Africa treated its imprisoned African citizens like animals.”&nbsp;&nbsp;The accounts that I was hearing verified the worst of Mandela’s statements, especially those about women and gender-based violence. The women’s struggle stories are particularly overlooked historically and their treatment at the hands of the security police was different to men’s.&nbsp;

Our vision is that MBBs’ educational film WE ARE NOT AFRAID will preserve this rich South African cultural heritage, capture the memories of South Africa’s long struggle against apartheid, honour the legacy of struggle veterans, and raise consciousness, especially about gender-based violence past and present.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The focus on Robben Island is an obvious one as the most notorious apartheid prison which held Nelson Mandela and hundreds of other political prisoners. However, we have aimed to concentrate on the unknown ‘foot soldiers’ of the struggle, as opposed to the liberation leaders, whose stories have been told many times of course.&nbsp;&nbsp;

As Thoko Mpumlwana, a political prisoner held at the brutal Number 4 women’s jail at the Old Fort says:“Human beings must not repeat mistakes of the past and to communicate that through testimony and music would cut through much better than probably saying it or writing a thesis. Because if people understand what was going on, it will be a learning tool for future generations. To know what it means to dehumanize the other, and to also know that even in the midst of that dehumanization, the truth prevails, good will always prevail over evil.”&nbsp;

In a kingdom that celebrates colour like nowhere else on earth, choosing which Rajasthani city to explore is like taking your pick from the rainbow. For starters, there’s the Pink City of Jaipur, the Blue City of Jodhpur, the Gold City of Jaisalmer and the White City of Udapair—and each have their own story to tell.

Jaipur’s most distinctive landmarks include salmon-hued structures like the honeycomb Hawa Mahal and the shimmering pink City Palace, which houses the former Maharajas of India. The city’s pink history commenced in 1876, when Queen Victoria’s son, Albert Edward, visited India. Maharaja Ram Singh had the whole city painted pink since the colour represented hospitality at the time, and a law was later passed to maintain the colour for all future buildings.

Meanwhile in the Jodhpur, the history behind its blue hue still remains a bit of a mystery. Some say the colour represents the Brahmins, which are castles within Hindu society. Others say it’s because the colour reflects sunlight and keeps houses cool during the sweltering summer months. This dazzling oasis of a city sits in the vast Thar Desert and is known for its spectacular architectural masterpieces - namely the mighty Mehrangarh Fort, which rises upon a hilltop around 122 metres above Jodhpur’s glittering skyline. It's one of the most magnificent forts in all of India and is still run by the Jodhpur royal family. Our favourite spot to catch glimpses of these graceful creatures roaming in the wild is an isolated area close to Jawai Bandh Lake in the region known as Sena. The area’s tiny villages, dams and forested hills make the perfect setting to hop on open Jeeps and cruise into the sun-lit sand dunes, spotting leopards that reside amongst the rocky hills. The big cats can be seen foraging for food or roaming through granite hills, and according to the <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/travel/destinations/about-jawai-bandh-in-rajasthan-where-the-leopards-do-not-harm-the-unguarded-locals/photostory/82155431.cms?picid=82155460" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(17, 85, 204);">Times of India</a>, the Rabari tribe considers leopards to be the guards of their local deity, and hence, the leopards in this area reside safely.

Dubbed the ‘Venice of the East,’ the city of Udaipur is built around three interconnected lakes—Lake Pichola, Fateh Sagar Lake, and the smaller Swaroop Sagar Lake—and is encircled by the hills of the Aravalli mountain range, creating one of the most romantic settings in all of India. Marble temples, family mansions and fairytale palaces (several of which have been converted into luxury heritage hotels), rise up from the shimmering lake like a mirage, most notably Udaipur’s Lake Palace, which is set on a small island in the middle of Lake Pichola and can be seen in the James Bond film Octopussy. There’s a wealth of great lakeside cafes and restaurants along Lake Pichola, and you can even take scenic cruises to the lake's surrounding islands (we recommend going at sunset!).

Have you never been to the most glorious region (in our humble opinion) of all of France? Or perhaps you’ve been here countless times, to savour the incredible wine, soak up the atmosphere of those magical vineyards, and enjoy equally exquisite Burgundian food. Either way, if it’s your first time or your fiftieth, I’m here to sing the praises of our spiritual second home.David Butterfield—son of our co-founders George and Martha—makes wine here in Beaune and likes to say that while Toronto is B&amp;R’s ‘heart’, our European operations office in Beaune, is the ‘soul’ of B&amp;R. After making my way there, I must confirm that it’s true. Here’s why this wonderful region keeps producing trips of amazing vintage year in and year out—and why you should make your way here—especially if it’s your first time.

Diving back into over fifty years of Butterfield lore and legend, it’s our <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/trip/burgundy-biking/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(62, 115, 155);">Burgundy Biking trip</a> which paved the way (or pedalled the way?) for thousands of bike trips to come, in regions as far-flung as Morocco and Vietnam (and anywhere else that looks great by two wheels).Burgundy is the grande dame, the original, the classic, the quintessential B&amp;R trip, and it doesn’t get any better than pedalling through the vineyards and vistas and sipping Grands Crus in the very region where they were grown. (We also know pretty much everyone in town, so getting that last-minute table at Les Caves de la Madeleine shouldn’t be a problem)

WHY BURGUNDY?

Believe me, first-timers and non-bikers, when I say you can do it. Caveat: I am not a professional biker by any means: I am a professional sitter. (As the Digital Marketing Specialist in the Toronto office, I’m most often found behind a desk than behind a set of handlebars).

YOU NEVER FORGET YOUR FIRST (BIKE TRIP)

I’m also a mere commuter biker—I don’t travel more than 10 kilometers (a little over 6 miles) per day. I was a little intimidated at the prospect of going—gasp!—as far as 30 or even 50 kilometres, the average daily ride in Burgundy.But I’m pleased to say I made it 55 kilometres, with the moral support and encouragement of my guide (merci mille fois, Chris Litt!). I felt fine the next day, even embarking upon another 30-kilometre lunch ride through the rolling hills with our French team. Toronto is wonderfully flat as a pancake, but those Burgundian hills had me working harder than I was used to. But that sense of accomplishment? Well worth it.

Another excellent option when testing your mettle on a bike trip is simple—just choose an e-bike! It’s an incredible thing, especially if you and your travelling companions are of differing abilities. I tested out an e-bike on another ride, and I loved it. (Tip: ‘Turbo’ mode will have you zipping up hills while other folks are huffing and puffing). With an adjustable electric assist, you’re still ‘working’ as little, or as much as you want to, as you can adjust how much boost you get with the click of a button. Easy-peasy.

DON’T FEAR THE E-BIKE

Let’s be honest, though: you’ve come to Burgundy for the sumptuous cuisine and the wine, right? (Or perhaps those legendary B&amp;R picnics you may have heard about?) I’ll leave the wine rhapsodizing <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/blog/2016/01/14/best-burgundy-wines/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(62, 115, 155);">to our experts</a>, but will add a few of my observations about some local delicacies: did you know the oh-so-French specialty, escargot, originated here? The Burgundian snail, Helix pomatia, is the most sought-after, as they’re the biggest and the sweetest-tasting variety. They’re also difficult to farm, so wild-caught snails are the ones to eat. Don’t miss out.

COME FOR THE WINE, STAY FOR THE CUISINE

There’s also the matter of that quintessential French condiment: mustard. While most mustard seeds are actually grown in North America and imported, this <a href="https://www.fallot.com/en/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(62, 115, 155);">local moutarderie’s</a> Burgundy mustard is made with local mustard seeds and combined with Burgundy wine. It’s intensely flavourful and even better than anything you’ve ever tasted. (You may even ride through mustard fields depending on the season you come in). Another local delicacy that pairs nicely with mustard is the terrine known as jambon persillé (literally, ‘parsleyed ham’). A slice of it with a dab of mustard and a torn-off chunk of fresh bread? Heavenly.I also fell in love with the charming little candy, Anis de Flavigny, another locally-made treat. At the heart of these candies lie green anise seeds, tumbled in thin layers of tumbled sugar. Originating in 1591, initially by monks, these local candies are famous countrywide and are still being made on-site at the abbey, although no longer by ascetics. The flavours and beautiful illustrations on each tin make these a sweet souvenir, too.

PASS THE (BURGUNDIAN) MUSTARD, PLEASE

One of our most beloved hotels, <a href="https://www.domaine-rymska.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Domaine de Rymska</a>, occupies a working farm in the tranquil Burgundian countryside. This Relais &amp; Chateaux property has been meticulously restored and offers some of the best farm-to-table cuisine in the region. You'll even witness lambs, thoroughbred horses and other majestic creatures trotting about on the hotel's grounds. With a secluded atmosphere and an incredible selection of wine, it’s a place where you’ll feel welcome and at ease.

ANOTHER DIVINE PLACE TO REST

All good things must come to an end, but the journey didn’t stop after I came home: I bought a touring bike to continue my own exploration of the ‘slow road’ back home in Toronto, and I can’t wait to see how far my two wheels will take me this year. Long story short: once you open your heart to Burgundy, only time will tell what magic it will work upon you, long after you’ve returned.

Cycling Through a Wedding in Vietnam

Vietnam is a land of gorgeous vistas and vivid history, but when we cycle there, it’s the encounters with those we meet along the road that truly bring it to life, forming deep and unforgettable connections.For the Mekong Delta section of B&amp;R’s <a href="https://butterfield.com/trip/scheduled/cambodia-vietnam-biking" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Cambodia and Vietnam Biking</a> trip, we stay at the Azerai Can Tho, on a peaceful island in a tributary of the Mekong near the city of Can Tho. After breakfast, we take a scenic morning boat ride to get to reunite with our trusty bikes. We pass through floating markets where enthusiastic vendors tempt us with a huge variety of fruits and vegetables, and there are even little beverage boats selling water, juice, and beer (yes, it’s still morning, but you never know when the mood will strike).

Our captain steers us towards the shore with its shantytowns and rickety wharves among flotsam and water hyacinths, and we just manage to fit into a narrow canal, practically in the living rooms of the people who live on the banks. They don’t mind though; there are friendly smiles from every direction as our boat passes under low bridges with school children peddaling their bikes across. We soon see our own beautiful B&amp;R bikes parked in a neat row on the laneway above.We disembark from the boat and pedal along a concrete path just wide enough for bikes, scooters and pedestrians to safely pass one another. We pass through households that straddle this tiny roadway, gardens bursting with limes, oranges, pomelos, jackfruit, durian and many more of the fruits that thrive in the fertile soil of the Mekong DeltaNow it’s our turn to cross over the little bridges, which offer great viewspoints up and down the canals, where boats bear the heavy loads of fruit and other goods throughout this aquatic network.

As we round a bend, flanked by rows of coconut and banana trees, we can hear music and laughter through the vegetation ahead. Suddenly, an obstruction presents itself directly on the road ahead: a large, white, festive tent. We draw nearer, and beside the tent, we see a large photo of a happy young couple. It’s clear now: we are about to pass through a wedding!That’s right: in Vietnam, wedding receptions take place in these huge tents placed over the entire width of the road. You have two options: go directly through the event if space permits, or take a detour.Here, though, we are welcomed warmly to momentarily join in the celebrations! The bride herself greets us at the entrance. We congratulate her on her nuptials and pose for photos; it’s a moment to cherish. Our guide, Dinh, grabs the MC’s mic and sings, “Happy wedding to you! Happy wedding to you!”

Within the tent, the attendees sit at rows of tables laden with beer and ice, cheering the interlopers in helmets and bike gear and inviting us to join in a toast as we wheel through. It’s impossible to keep from dancing to the energetic beat emanating from the sound system that we pass on our way out of the tent. We ride out into the sunlight and birdsong once more, warmed and uplifted by this serendipitous encounter. The music recedes in the distance, but we still feel the rhythm for days to come.&nbsp;It’s the moments like this that make a bike trip through Vietnam so worthwhile. Part of their beauty is that we can’t predict their exact nature. We just know that they will happen, and that they will be the indelible impression of a place and a people that we will look back on with joy for years to come, spurring us to get in the saddle once more.

Why ‘Guaranteed Departures’ Are Important For Your Next Vacation

In the cycling and hiking world,&nbsp;Butterfield &amp; Robinson&nbsp;is generally considered the most luxurious of the companies offering scheduled group trips, and they are one of the few with guaranteed departures. However, not every scheduled trip in their vast catalog is guaranteed, though most are and it is clearly indicated when you select a date.While many companies do not formally offer guaranteed departures, there are some workarounds to give you peace of mind. One question to ask any tour operator not guaranteeing departures is, “what is the minimum group size?” For many better companies it is just three, and that usually means two parties: a couple and a single, or two couples. However, if you have three in your group and that’s the policy, you can essentially guarantee your own departure. Similarly, some tour operators show the status of trip dates on their websites, and you can select one that is already well beyond the minimum threshold.

A snowy Norwegian winter offers a magical experience, especially in February and March. You’re out of the arctic night, and normal sunrises and sunsets create full days for exploring.&nbsp;I’ve crafted our Norway Winter Adventure to unfold in Alta, an off-the-beaten-path winter wonderland situated nearly 250 miles north of the Arctic Circle.&nbsp;<a href="https://butterfield.com/get-inspired/in-search-of-darkness-the-illuminating-kind" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(17, 85, 204);">Embracing the outdoors </a>is built right into Norwegian culture, and Alta’s diverse landscapes make it one of the best places to visit in Norway. Whether you’re snowmobiling, snowshoe hiking or gliding through forests via your own team of huskies, every day offers endless possibilities to explore and appreciate the land.

Alta has long been recognized as a prime spot for the northern lights and a focal point for scientists who study the phenomenon. The town is often referred to as ‘the city of the northern lights’ thanks to its location far away from light pollution and cold, dry climate, which creates the best chances for witnessing the spectacle.

Not only will an expert guide lead us on a quest to see the northern lights, but the founder of Sorrisniva Wilderness Lodge will explain the science behind the phenomenon. Then we'll learn about its significance in the culture of the Indigenous Sami people, shared by members of their community. The Sami have lived across northern Scandinavia for thousands of years and considered the northern lights a divine and sacred presence, inhabited by spirits and deities.During our stay at Sorrisniva Wilderness Lodge, travellers will notice each room is adorned with floor-to-ceiling windows. While nature ultimately decides if the northern lights will grace us with their presence during our stay in Norway, it will be hard to resist falling asleep each night while gazing at the Arctic skies above.

The Sami are the oldest Indigenous people of Norway. The area around Alta is the least populated of all the Norwegian counties and is considered the heartland of the Sami people—around half of the entire population lives in Norway.On Day 2, travellers will meet with our Sami guides in a traditional Lavvu tent, they’ll share insight into their way of life around a bonfire. Instead of driving or walking to the location, we'll sled through the snow pulled by the group's Sami reindeer—which have been an integral part of Sami culture and spiritual beliefs for centuries.

Sami culture has been intertwined with practicing skills related to reindeer herding for centuries, and their close relationship with these animals is ingrained in their traditions. Sami folklore is filled with songs and rituals that honour the reindeer and the spiritual connection between humans and these animals.

<a href="https://www.sorrisniva.no/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Sorrisniva</a> captures everything you can imagine for the perfect Arctic experience and provides travellers with the best of both worlds. Guide Kick-Off 2022

Our 2022 European season commenced unlike any other year we’ve seen in history.&nbsp;After two years of virtual dinner parties, post-work Zoom happy hours and flexing their creative muscles from the <a href="https://butterfield.com/get-inspired/what-social-distancing-looks-like-around-the-world" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">comfort of their homes</a>, it’s safe to say that our Guides were absolutely yearning for the moment to reconvene in true B&amp;R fashion.We’ve hosted our annual Guide Kick-Off from our office in Beaune in the heart of Burgundy every year. And while a certain pandemic drove a significant wedge into how our seasons regularly commence, it also wove a silver lining into the atmosphere at this year’s festivities.

Seeing friends who’ve been scattered around the world for the past two years was incredibly special and inspiring. Feelings of emotion filled the air as our talented team shared stories, laughter and tears of joy. From eager new guides and our savviest veterans to a few faces from our Toronto office—this year’s Kick-Off marked a new era at B&amp;R. One signifying the return of travel, feeling grateful to embrace human connection once again and being more inspired than ever by the places we’re so lucky to visit.

Typical days at Kick-Off began with communal breakfasts and plenty of espresso—energized to hear rousing information sessions from our varying departments. New guides were filled in on everything from B&amp;R’s history to our sustainability efforts as Experience Designer Christine Tucker shared the latest news about our revitalized <a href="https://butterfield.com/who-we-are/sustainability/the-slow-fund" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Slow Fund</a>.Come lunchtime we settle into picnics with our local friends in Beaune, a few who cater our <a href="https://butterfield.com/trip/scheduled/burgundy-wine-country-biking" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent;">Burgundy Wine Country Biking</a> trips! Fuelled for the afternoon, the crew heads to the atelier for bike training with our cycling experts, then embarked on daily 30 km bike rides through Burgundy’s villages and vineyards. This was the perfect opportunity to make use of our new GPS system, bringing forth a seamless way to navigate the meticulously-crafted biking routes you can expect on this season’s <a href="https://butterfield.com/how-to-travel/scheduled-trips" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent;">Scheduled trips</a>. It was incredible seeing everyone assume the role of a Guide: raising one another’s spirits, embracing physical activity and ensuring no one was left behind.

That quintessential spirit of generosity proliferated throughout evening aperitivi, dinners and wine tastings, where our entire roster of Guides then assumed the role of a host: refilling their neighbour’s glass before their own, ensuring everyone sampled the best dishes and diving into vibrant conversation.The final night’s celebration started off as a beautiful dinner and slowly evolved into an impromptu talent show and karaoke! In true Guide fashion, no one was afraid to show off their chops. High spirits and adrenaline filled the air as five days of intense training came to an end.&nbsp;Below are some of our favourite moments from this year’s Guide Kick-Off!

Off The Beaten Trail In Peru

Compared to magazine writers, filmmakers have it easy. (Yes, I realize how biased that probably sounds. But let me explain.)In order to properly capture a region’s essence, writers have to suffer. We slave away in front of our keyboards, desperately clamouring for the right combination of words to describe not just what a place looks like, but how it feels—its vibe, its milieu, its ineffable je ne sais quoi. (To wit: I scoured the thesaurus for 20 minutes before settling on “milieu.”)Filmmakers, on the other hand, know no such struggles. In order to inform the audience they’re in Paris, Rome, New York or Sydney, all they need to do is drop in a quick establishing shot of the Eiffel Tower, Coliseum, Statue of Liberty or Opera House, respectively. Landmarks of this calibre are so famously unmistakable, that they come to not just identify a place, but emblematize it.For more than a century now, Machu Picchu has been an icon. Since Hiram Bingham’s first fateful trip to the Incan site in 1911 – and especially after the publishing of his 1948 memoir The Lost City of the Inca, which propelled his journey into the popular conscience – Machu Picchu has been Peru’s most trafficked attraction.

At its peak, Machu Picchu attracted more than one million tourists each year. Even with restrictions encouraged by UNESCO and imposed by the Peruvian government, upwards of 900,000 still visit annually, taking the Hiram Bingham Train from Cusco to stare at the sun gate, or hike the nearby (and nearly as famous) Inca Trail. And to be fair, Machu Picchu’s appeal is obvious – I don’t think I’ve ever had an experience as transcendent as seeing it at sundown, after all the tourists had cleared out (working for B&amp;R has its perks).But I sometimes pity those who hop a flight out of the country as soon as they’ve checked the spectacle off of their bucket list. I’ve spent a decade globetrotting for both work and pleasure, and I’ve found few countries that boast as wide a breadth of natural wonders, or as rich a reservoir of cultural heritage. That so few people take the time to savour all that Peru has to offer is one of travel’s greatest travesties—and one that I'm determined to correct.With all due respect to The Lost City, I think it’s high time that people found out about Peru’s myriad other unforgettable adventures. There are enough off-the-grid, little known and overlooked experiences here to fill an entire magazine, but I think my editor would kill me if I took up that much space. (Editor’s Note: That’s true.) So in the interest of brevity, here are five of my absolute favourite parts of Peru that most people never get to experience.

The Amazon

When was the last time you fished for piranhas and swam with pink dolphins? That's what I thought.The Peruvian Amazon is a treasure that's somehow remained hidden from the vast majority of the travel industry. The lush natural rainforest plays host to a slew of incredible creatures, from alligators and anacondas to jaguars and spider monkeys, and even its human inhabitants have embraced the idea of being off the grid—the region's main urban hub is Iquitos, the biggest city in the world that you can’t actually drive to. The best way to experience it is to quite literally go with the flow by floating down the Amazon River. Using a luxe cruise ship like the Aria Amazon as your home base, you can take skiffs that venture deeper into the heart of the jungle for wildlife viewing, and dock in remote villages to meet the locals and explore on foot.Opportunities for water-based adventure abound, including kayaking, canoeing and swimming in the Amazon River by day. By night, you can break out a telescope and awe as constellations come to life in the skies of the Southern Hemisphere.

The aptly named Sacred Valley is a visually stunning, incredibly rich playground for adventure. Some of the best hiking trails in the world intersect the valley, passing through ancient ruins, agricultural enclaves and sweeping valleys, all of them lined by the Andes mountains. Here you can truly disconnect and commune with the natural world; hiking through the valley feels like stepping back into a simpler, more peaceful era. The few people you encounter along the way are locals who live off the land, the way their ancestors have for generations. On one hike, our group passed by a local woman who kindly offered us fresh, hot potatoes from her huatia (a sort of underground earth oven, shaped like a pyramid).But the Sacred Valley isn't solely for serenity—adrenaline junkies will find plenty of adventures, too.Mountain bikers flock to this part of Peru, but those who prefer four wheels to two can take it all in on ATVs, while those who prefer four legs to four wheels can ride horseback on gorgeous Peruvian Paso horses. Want to get on the water?Kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding and white water rafting are all on offer here. And if you're looking for a little elevation, you can rock-climb up a mountainside and zip-line back down, or paraglide above to explore it from the perspective of the Incan gods.

The Sacred Valley

Arequipa & Colca Canyon

Your Instagram feed will love <a href="https://butterfield.com/get-inspired/a-new-side-of-peru-arequipa-the-colca-canyon" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Arequipa</a>.A colonial-era gem awash in white buildings made from hand-cut silar stone, Arequipa is a gorgeous city in an even more stunning setting. Three volcanoes frame the city, towering (safely) in the distance and providing the city with some stunning views, which few visitors to Peru ever get to drink in.But there's much more to take in than the views—the food scene in Arequipa is incredible. A historical trade hub that connected Cusco and Lake Titicaca with countries such as Bolivia and Chile, today Arequipa is a melting pot where a mix of cultures, flavours, ingredients and spices come together in the local picanterias (lunch spots), creating a unique culinary experience.You've got to try some rocoto relleno, Peru's version of stuffed pepper, and chupe de camarones, a shrimp chowder. Then wash it all down with chicha morada, a delicious drink made from purple Peruvian corn.Culture and history abound in Arequipa too, including the Santa Catalina Monastery, an architectural stunner that recounts the scandalous tenure of the nuns who once lived there, and Juanita, a mummy only discovered when a glacier melted and revealed her tomb.

As if the city itself weren’t enough of a draw, Arequipa also provides a gateway to the stunning Colca Canyon, whose terraced valleys are even less trafficked than those in the Sacred Valley, despite the fact that some points of Colca reach greater depths than the Grand Canyon. Both the hiking and the horseback riding here is incredible, offering postcard-perfect views at every turn, and adventure junkies will love the river rafting.

Few people realize that the best archaeology experience in Peru has nothing to do with Machu Picchu.Best known as the home of Peru's traditional marinera dance, Trujillo is a coastal town in northwestern Peru that not only boasts beautiful and colourful colonial architecture but acts as a gateway to pre-Incan archaeological sites that bring ancient history to life.Nearby marvels include the Huaca de la Luna ("the moon temple"), one of the most important spiritual sites for the Moche culture, who populated the area from 100 to 700 AD, and El Brujo, the temples of which are adorned with polychrome reliefs depicting wars, gods and an ancient way of life.But the best part is what—or maybe I should say who—isn't there. Because so many people forego Trujillo, savvy travellers are treated to a raw and relatively tourist-free experience that puts them directly in touch with ancient history—sometimes literally, in fact. With so few tourists, there’s little need for ropes and barriers, meaning there's nothing stopping you from reaching out to literally touch ancient history.

Trujillo & the North

Often overlooked or skipped by those flocking to Machu Picchu and Cusco, Lima is arguably the culinary capital of the world right now, boasting three coveted spots on the list of The World's 50 Best Restaurants.Lima's restaurant scene has garnered a ton of attention from the press, but few editorials (and, thankfully, not many tourists) seem to appreciate just how cool the rest of the city is. Perched on the coast of the Pacific, the city offers sea, surf, sand and some incredible ocean views.Further inland, Lima's myriad unique neighbourhoods make it the perfect place to meander on foot. In posh Miraflores, upscale shops, stunning sea views and great restaurants are complemented by huacas, the pre-Incan ruins scattered throughout the neighbourhood that add a bit of culture to all that class. In boho-chic Barranco, boutique shops and local artists dot a unique and colourful neighbourhood just begging to be snapped for social media. And in the city centre, fabulous architecture denotes the legacy of the conquistadors who once reigned over the city—be sure to check out Aliaga House, where consecutive generations of the Aliaga family have lived since the land was first granted to Jerónimo de Aliaga in 1535!

Wheels 101: How To Prepare For A Bike Trip

Ah, the age-old question: how fit do I need to be to do a bike trip? One of our most commonly asked questions, our answer is: you don’t have to be an athlete in any way to complete a B&amp;R bike trip.We’ve been doing this for over 50 years, and we’re big on everyone marching to the beat of their own drum. We believe that you should go at whatever speed suits you: slow, fast or something in between. No matter what speed you plan to go, it’s a good idea to train prior to your trip to get the most out of it.Our best bit of advice is this: get out and ride! Spending some dedicated time on your bike before your trip will help avoid overly sore muscles, lessen fatigue and acclimatize to life on two wheels. Below we've shared some important tips to help you prepare for your next B&amp;R biking or e-biking trip:&nbsp;

As mentioned above, the best way to prepare for your trip is to simply get out on your bike! We recommend riding outdoors for a few hours per week for the month leading up to your trip, increasing the time spent riding the closer you get to your departure date, and adding in some cross-training activities such as strength training, yoga or Pilates.&nbsp;We highly recommend getting outside on your bike as often as possible—spin classes are great for cardio, but don’t give you much practice for handling and braking, which are important skills you’ll need to stay comfortable and safe on your B&amp;R trip. Don’t forget to keep hydrated throughout your activities, stretch afterwards, and leave ample time to recover.&nbsp;&nbsp;Above all, make sure you enjoy the ride!

Bike Safety - Before Your Trip 

Here are our recommendations for getting ready for your bike trip, based on your trip’s <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/our-equipment#activity-levels" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">activity level</a>. As you ride, the motor provides a boost of energy that aids your efforts, allowing you to ride faster and further than you could on a standard bike.&nbsp;While they create the perfect opportunity for pedalling in hilly areas, it should be noted that e-bikes feel heavier than standard road bikes due to their build with batteries and electric motors. This means it may take some time to get used to the feel of the extra weight as you begin to ride.If you've never used an e-bike, but have booked a B&amp;R e-biking trip, we recommend renting one before your B&amp;R trip to get a sense of the speed, weight and feel.
