Alsace, a region in northeastern France, has a complex and tumultuous history marked by frequent shifts in sovereignty between France and Germany. Originally part of the Holy Roman Empire, it came under French control in the 17th century following the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648. This period saw significant cultural and economic development under French influence. However, Alsace's strategic location made it a focal point of Franco-German conflicts, particularly during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, when it was annexed by the newly unified German Empire. This annexation was formalized by the Treaty of Frankfurt in 1871, leading to significant demographic and cultural changes as the region integrated into Germany.Alsace's German rule was relatively short-lived, as it returned to French control after World War I through the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. The region was again occupied by Germany during World War II, resulting in a harsh period of Nazi occupation and forced assimilation. Following the Allied victory in 1945, Alsace was restored to France, where it has remained since. Today, Alsace is known for its unique blend of French and German cultural influences, reflected in its architecture, cuisine, and bilingualism. The region's history of shifting allegiances has left a lasting legacy, making it a symbol of European reconciliation and cooperation within the modern European Union.

Provence is one of France’s most sensuous regions, but it’s also pretty serious. To wit: Mont Ventoux—of Tour de France fame—is where serious cyclists stretch their legs.
